Thanks Chris, I really appreciate you taking the time to share. I appreciate this distinction, and it’s not lost on me - but isn’t taking responsibility for our actions an assumed part of being an adult? I don’t understand why this this is heaped so heavily on those who identify as alcoholics (at least that’s my experience). Does it seem that way to you?
This disproportionate emphasis feels like it’s rubbing peoples nose in something our culture already tells them they should feel ashamed of, and I don’t see that helping. In my experience, this does get conflated with taking responsibility for the disease (even if that’s not the intention)… as if shame has magnets and they all find each other and get bundled together…
